Sr/Jr EYC and Teen Group

Episcopal Youth Community, most commonly referred to as “EYC” is for any student in grade 6-12. In short, EYC is just another way to say youth group. The group is divided into two sections, junior high from 5:30-7 p.m. (grades 6-8) and senior high from 6:30-8 p.m. (grades 9-12). The group meets weekly on Sunday night at the youth house which is located just east of the GSL sanctuary, 252 LeMaster. During our time on Sunday night, the youth experience Christian fellowship in a safe environment with adult supervision. From 6:30-7 p.m. both the junior and senior high youth share a meal together.

On Wednesday night, grades 9-12 have Teen Group. This is a time for the high school aged students to discuss varied topics from sources ranging from the Bible to the current issue of Time magazine. We meet from 7-8:30 p.m. at one of three locations: first Wednesday of each month we will dine out, the second and fourth Wednesday we will meet at the youth house and the third Wednesday at my personal residence. An invitation is extended regardless of denomination to any student grades 6-12 for EYC and Teen Group at GSL.

During the academic school year, the group will have many opportunities to experience travel and activities away from GSL. Local activity examples include, but are not limited to, Redbirds or Grizzlies games, Memphis River Kings hockey games, trips to the Heifer ranch, etc. During the month of January, the group takes a bigger annual trip. Depending on the location and group size going from GSL, this is also an opportunity to invite youth from the other parishes in this diocese. Historically, the trip has been to a ski village in the Carolinas. This year we will embark on a new journey for the sake of culture and variety. On January 18-21, 2008, the youth will spend four days and three nights in New York City, NY. While in New York City we will visit Trinity Church on Wall Street, St. Thomas Church at 53rd and 5th Ave. and The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in upper Manhattan. These three churches have been instrumental in the development of the Episcopal Church in this country. Their architecture alone will provide the youth with a visual they will never forget! In between these church visits the youth will have the opportunity to take in one of the most culturally rich cities on earth! I look forward to this journey and the months leading up to it.

The youth house on Lemaster has been updated as of September 13, 2007. The updates include new light fixtures and ceiling fans, new commode and sink fixture in the bathroom, and new sink, garbage disposal and fixtures in the kitchen. A few of the rooms in the house also received a new coat of paint. Even though the house is due to be demolished in the expansion of GSL, I felt as though these simple renovations were necessary for the life of the group. All items added to the house are transferable upon demolition of the house. The rooms have been organized and include a game room complete with fussball and air hockey table, TV room with ample seating, a library for meditation and study, a dining room for the group to eat together in (this will double as a good Sunday school space) and a living room for conversation. The kitchen is now functional for cooking and serving group meals. Please stop in to see our newly organized space!

I would like to form a data base for contact purposes. If you are the parent/guardian of an EYC youth please send me an email with your contact information (hilary@gslparish.org). Also, if you would like to volunteer to provide dinner or to help serve dinner on a Sunday night at EYC, send me an email. I am in the process of updating the youth webpage link on the GSL website. This webpage will always be a source of current information for your children and for you. There will also be an up to date calendar of events on the youth bulletin board at GSL Church as well as in the current Messenger and the upcoming week’s events in the Sunday bulletin. Post card reminders via post mail are also to come, as are notes home in Thursday folders at GSL. Through the data base, I will also send out email reminders to parents and students about upcoming events.

I am really exited to be here at GSL and look forward to all that is to come!
